Catacombs of Paris

My interest in the Paris tunnels led me to this canvas. Like the catacombs, I see this as a celebration of life and, that even after all this time, we can walk among the dead underneath Parisian streets.

The Catacombs de Paris were once stone mines. In 1786, bones from many Parisian cemeteries were moved here. The bones are arranged in patterns along tunnels and only some of these are open to the public. Streets that are directly above the tunnels are named. I’ve included two streets in my work: Rue de Broussais and Avenue Montsouris.

The piece has three skulls among the other bones. If you love Parisian history it’s for you.
